About Stitching Exchange

Founded in 2019 by artist Melissa Sarris, The Stitching Exchange is a collaborative project that brings people together through stitching, conversation, and creativity. In partnership with Refugee and Immigrant Support Services of Emmaus (RISSE) and Up-Stitch, the Stitching Exchange offers informal sewing opportunities using basic sewing and embroidery to build community, practice English, and encourage creative expression.

Thanks to the ongoing support of the Up-Stitch community, including donations of fabric, sewing notions, and embroidery supplies, participants have access to the materials they need to create and learn. More than 25 participants have received sewing machines to use at home—enabling them to continue the creative work begun in our shared spaces and, in some cases, earn income by selling handmade items or taking on custom sewing projects. You can find Stitching Exchange items in the Up-Stitch store as well as at local farmers markets.

Hand/Work 2022

Hand/Work was a new program for Stitching Exchange and was supported by a decentralization grant. We experimented with an informal time bank system, an alternative currency system where hours of service take the place of money. The idea behind creating this system is to better support all of the needs of Stitching Exchange participants and provide direct opportunities for volunteers.
